The lyrics from “Jesus Christ Super Star” run through my head as I suddenly wake at the ungodly hour of 6 AM. Stumbling to the coffee maker, an old TV slogan enters my sleepy brain. “It’s time to make the donuts.” ie: I have to write a blog. Blogs are suppose to be fun, personal, connect with people, and give information they’re interested in. As I stare at the blank page before me on my computer another quote flashes across my gray matter, “There’s nothing to fear but fear itself.” Right on Winston Churchill. Yet all I can think of are questions. Why am I afraid of blogs? What do I write about? I write comedies, how do I write a blog? Who’s my audience?
I didn’t grow up with social media or blogs. I’m a private person. I have difficulty understanding why anyone would be interested (except close friends and family) in what’s going on in my personal life. As I try to introduce the world to myself and my plays, I’m wondering … what should I share?
WOULD YOU KNOW MY NAME?
I’m a self-proclaimed happy woman with a slightly sarcastic sense of humor. Definitely not a morning person. In fact, I’d say I don’t function till I have a cup of coffee. Some days I amaze myself, and others I’m an enigma. My motto is ‘Live, Love and Laugh along with life.’ Finally, I’m an unconditionally loving fiance, mother, and grammy. I am Susan Parker, and what I’m exceptional at is writing successful, situational comedic plays.
PERSONAL ALERT! My late husband, Michael Parker, left an indelible mark as an international playwright with 15 plays published by Concord Theatricals. After we married, I was over the moon when he asked if I’d like to co-write with him. Although I was still teaching full time, I fell in love with writing plays that brought laughter into peoples lives. So after writing 7 of the 15 hilarious plays, I laughingly call myself “The Accidental Playwright.”
WELCOME TO PARKER PLAYS - WHERE LAUGHTER KNOWS NO LIMITS
“The Parker Brand of Comedic Plays captures a timeless sense of humor, quick witted observations about the absurdities of life and provides the expertise of crafting situational comedies that offer today’s audiences refreshing, laugh-out-loud entertainment.”
Where do I get ideas? I have a mind like a pinball machine, it flits from one thing to another, I like to call it my creative bent. So ideas for the start of a plot can come from just about anywhere. For instance while on vacation in an old English fishing village I read a sign that said, Sandy Toes & Salty Kisses. Ding, Ding - How about a destination wedding where things go hilariously awry and the wedding planner is totally inept…Sandy Toes & Salty Kisses
On a vacation in Europe, (I do love to travel) I saw these incredibly large hot peppers hanging in a window with a sign - Viagra for Women. Light bulb moment - How about a mischievous plan of light-hearted romance revenge as a little blue pill that was meant to help menopausal woman is swapped and given to men. Surpisingly, it gives them menopausal symptoms.... Sex Please We’re Sixty
Wherever the idea comes from, it must be an opportunity through which to create laughter. One that others can relate to, become engaged in, and genuinely forget their troubles and enjoy two hours of entertainment.
Jerry Seinfeld speaks on the art of comedy as that its “highest aim is to make people laugh.” Bob Newhart states, “Laughter gives us distance. It allows us to step back from an event, deal with it and then move on” and I LOVE Kevin Hart’s quote that "Laughter heals all wounds, and that's one thing that everybody shares. No matter what you're going through, it makes you forget about your problems. I think the world should keep laughing.” AGREED!
